Assignment 6:  Designing a Garden

For this activity you are being asked to design a virtual garden either in your backyard or in the community. Design a virtual representation of your dream garden using computer software or any online platform of your choice (eg. Microsoft word). This assignment aims to combine creativity with digital skills to create a visually appealing and functional virtual garden. Plan the layout of your garden. Consider factors such as sunlight exposure, soil type, and the types of plants you want to include. Design pathways, seating areas, and any additional features you envision.

I already have a garden!!!!! - PERFECT. You can use your already established garden as long as you have collected the data and pictures you will need for your report.

Part 1 - Planning

What? - Start by deciding what to plant. The activity is centered on food production, so whatever you decide to grow needs to be edible. Start by consulting the Hardiness Zone MapLinks to an external site. for your zone. Consider the use (do not plant Brussels sprouts if everybody in your household hates the!!). Consider the susceptibility to pests as well as the possibility of planting heritage vegetables. You will also need to consider if you are starting from seeds or of you are buying seedlings for your virtual garden . 

When? - You should also consider the season on which you are planting. Check out this general guide.Links to an external site.

Where? - Location of your virtual garden is really important because it will affect the amount of light your plants get and when they get it. Plan your location carefully and be ready to explain your thought process. Again document with pictures.

Soil? - Decide if you are going to use commercial soil or soil from your garden. If you are going to use commercial soil, the bag or the company website should give you a composition analysis. If you are using soil from your yard, there is no need to do soil analysis. Formulate your own soil

Water - What source of water will you use for your virtual garden? is there a more sustainable option? What is your back up plan?

Fertilizer - Are you planning on using fertilizer? What kind? Where will you get it?

Container or raised bed type - If you are not doing an in ground plot you will need to decide on what you are building your raise beds from or which type of container are you picking. Should you be thinking about sustainability here?

After completing the design write a short report explaining the different sections of your garden. It should be a Word document, but you can write it as a narrative or as an outline. Either way make sure you touch on all the points stated in this section of the instructions
