Assignment Task

Assessment Details and Instructions

This assessment involves two parts: Part A, a group presentation and Part B, an individual summary of the presentation.  Collectively this assessment contributes 50% of your grade for this unit.

In groups of 3-4, students will produce and submit 8-10 PowerPoint slides which, using visual material (images, graphs, art, original creative video etc), illuminate a contemporary social issue relating to inequality. Groups will then outline an explanation and analysis of this using at least two sociological concepts and a historical overview of how this inequality emerged.

Same sex marriage:

Concepts: power, gender, status

Homelessness in young people

Concepts class, structure, and agency (structures in society) power 2

Some suggestions of contemporary social issues you might consider are a recent debate or event related to:

  • level of unemployment benefits
  • environmental issues
  • same sex marriage
  • youth curfews
  • older women and the growing number who are homeless.
  • exploitation of workers on temporary visas
  • public funding for private schools
  • or make a case for selecting another recent debate related to social inequality

Part A: Visual/PowerPoint presentation (group)

In the slideshow presentation, you need to include:

  • A title page that informs the audience of the social issue you have selected, your names, student numbers and the name of your teacher.
  • Representation of the contemporary social issue (through pictures, graphs, art etc.) This will require you to research the social issue, identify some key arguments or points that need to be communicated about it and to choose how best to communicate these key issues. Your individual written submissions (below) will go into details about what your Power Point is visually showing, so your PowerPoint may not have a lot of words.
  • Demonstration of familiarity with at least two key sociological concepts in relation to your selected issue.
  • Final slide with a reference list that follows APA 7th conventions. This reference list will include citations for the images/ graphs etc. that you used as well as key theories and news reports referred to.
  • The PowerPoint slides should be uploaded to the assessment dropbox by one group member after the presentation has been presented in class.
