Assignment Task: In the first essay, we analyzed specific literary texts, but texts come in all different shapes and sizes, not
just in the written form. In this essay, focus on a specific aspect of culture from a global perspective by exploring how culture animates our everyday lives, for example, in music, the arts, pictures, movies/TV, even different aspects of our lives, such as language, religion, cuisine, clothes, social habits. Write a thesis-driven, argumentative paper analyzing a specific cultural artifact from a global perspective, for example, a piece of music/instrument in a Bollywood movie, jerk chicken from the Caribbean, clothing items, such as sarees or the fez or the Stetson, etc. Each point you make must be supported with relevant evidence/examples (quotes) and sound reasoning.
Length and Format: The paper should be at least 1,100 words and should not exceed 1,800 words. (One double-spaced page of 12-point Times New Roman font is about 300 words, so it should be between 4-6 pages.) It should be formatted according to APA guidelines with a full References list numbered as the final page.
Sources: The sources for the paper will be the primary and secondary texts and must be included on the References list page.
Paper Structure: Use the following guidelines to structure your paper:
I. Introduction: Your intro should broadly introduce your topic and then connect it to the cultural artifact(s). It should then develop your argument in detail to gain the readers' interest. This should create common ground, establish the importance of the issue, establish credibility for you to speak on this topic, and set up the thesis statement. The thesis statement should give your readers a clear sense of what your argument will be.
II. Body: Your body paragraphs should incorporate a main point that supports and develops your main thesis statement. It should preferably be at the beginning of the paragraph. As part of your discussion of the topic/cultural artifact, be sure to incorporate signal phrases to contextualize quotes/examples from your primary sources and secondary texts. Your argument should present evidence and examples to back up your points. Each subsequent paragraph should gradually develop a detailed and complex argument.
III. Conclusion: Your conclusion should explain what the fully developed argument of the paper is and reflect on the implications of that argument for the paper's audience: sophisticated readers who are interested in or involved in world affairs. Make sure it is clear what you want the audience to think.
Style and Tone: This paper requires you to work closely with cultural artifact(s), which means that you will need to use signal phrases and in-text citation consistently and properly (according to APA guidelines) in order to effectively manage your source material without allowing it to overpower your own voice. In describing and responding critically to your source material, you must be sure to avoid unintentional plagiarism. Remember that you are addressing an audience of intelligent, sophisticated readers who come from a variety of backgrounds and hold a variety of positions on global issues. Your tone, therefore, should remain objective and respectful throughout the paper.
