Assignment Task

The assessment for this module requires you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge to effectively assess and plan nursing care for a patient with a common health condition. This guide should be read in conjunction with the Programme Handbook and augments the PowerPoint presentation (PowerPoint available on the module DLE) about the Module assignment that will be given during the module delivery.

Module Aims

To develop the students' knowledge and skills of healthcare assessment in a broad range of contexts, in order to effectively plan and evaluate nursing care.

Module Assessment

You will use a structured problem-solving approach to assess patient needs and then create a care plan which is both person-centred and evidence-based. Your plan will need to demonstrate your understanding of any relevant legal and ethical principles relating to effective assessment and care planning as well as describing any likely impact of the wider determinants of health pertinent to your chosen scenario.

The module assessment is divided into two parts: a structured assessment and care plan; and a discussion of the evidence and health policy that underpins and supports the plan.

There are 4 patient scenarios provided for you, the extended members of Family X who you have been introduced to throughout the Module. These family members represent people with health conditions relating to Adult, Child and Mental Health fields. You may choose any one of these scenarios as the focus of your assessment.

Assessment and Care Plan Discussion

In the second part of the assignment, you will provide some discussion about your assessments and related plan of care. Here you will demonstrate your knowledge by providing a rationale for the care that you have assessed, prioritised and planned. Remember that assessment drives care and that all assessment undertaken, and care given, must be based upon sound evidence and should be in line with any current guidelines, protocols and policy. You will also be able to utilise the resources that you have been provided with whilst undertaking the Module and add to this with your own reading and research.

This section will be presented in the form of a short essay of no more than words you should aim to get as near to the words as possible, too few and you risk not including enough material to warrant a pass. The essay should be presented in the third person and should adhere to the principles of academic writing and presentation. This will be discussed in the relevant Seminar and within the tutorial process.

You must provide evidence from credible literature sources to support the assessment used and the care that you have planned. To do this, you will need to find relevant journal articles and nursing texts that are related to the care being given. Please refer to the resources on the Module Moodle site but also do some searching to add to your wider knowledge and understanding.
