Overview:
This assignment asks students to make a massing model of the building and site with sustainable strategies. A massing model is a dimensionally accurate summary of the fundamental exterior forms of a building and how it relates to its site.
Guidelines
This assignment can be completed individually or in pairs.
- Build a massing model of the building on the site, constructed from poster-board cardboard with a foam core board base. The model should show the massing of the building and the main features of the site, such as property lines, streets, driveways, loading dock area and ramp, and some
landscaping elements. - Window and door openings to be shown.
- Roof parapets are shown with the top of the roof surface lower than the top of the walls
- Site base to be built-up to show roads, drive aisles, parking lots, etc and curbs, walkways, patios, and softscaping. Illustration board is a good thickness for these purposes.
- The colour scheme is to be white or off-white. If paint is used, ensure that it is flat (i.e. not shiny).
- Cardstock corners do not require to be mitered at 45°. Neat, square butt joints are acceptable.
- A small title plaque or label should identify the project, scale and students’ names. A simple ‘north’ arrow should also be placed on the site.
- Trees are to be naturalistic (e.g. dried yarrow) or made by the students – no store-bought model trees!
- Scale 1:200
- Sample models are available for viewing in the laser studio
