using Community Health Data: Building Community Coalitions Consider known health concerns in your community or issues to investigate to better understand how an issue is impacting your local population. With that issue in mind, how can your healthcare organization initiate or strengthen a coalition to better address this health need? And when you are taking the lead in interacting with the community, particularly in settings that draw media attention, how can you prepare to ensure you speak for your organization in ways that you intend? Use this Assignment to explore how you can achieve each and all of these goals, as well as make the case to your administration for community coalition building. Resources Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources. WEEKLY RESOURCES To prepare: Review the Learning Resources on community needs assessments and coalition building. Choose one health issue to research and report on in an executive summary. Consider examples such as adolescent suicide, stroke death, sexually transmitted disease rates, maternal and child health statistics, chronic disease rates, or another issue that needs to be addressed through a community coalition or by strengthening an existing community effort. Note: You will address obesity in Week 4. You are encouraged to focus on a different health issue for this Assignment. In making your selection, you will need to gather both local data and data on national trends for comparison. Also, prepare to identify community resources, if any, already in place. Consider your role as a representative of your healthcare organization to the community. Draw on the Learning Resources (as well as Optional Resources, as needed), including the Module 2 video introduction (Walden, 2024) with Dr. Catherine Garner and the Executive Voices video with Dr. Robert McWhirt (Walden, 2024), former nurse executive and Walden faculty, for perspectives and recommendations. Reflect on the importance of media preparation—of all sorts, including for using social media—in building positive community interactions. Review the requirements of the executive summary, and focus your research on gathering information to complete the Assignment. Keep in mind you are writing for the leadership of your healthcare organization. Aim for a summary that is informative and persuasive in making the case for a strategic initiative to address the community health need. The Assignment: In a Word document of 3 pages, plus title and reference pages, include the following: Introduce the focus health issue. State the local scope of this health issue compared to national trends. Analyze how the data translate to the need for a local, community-wide approach. Identify one or more community organizations that should participate in a coalition effort to address this health issue, and justify the role of each community organization in a partnership effort. Explain why your healthcare organization should take the initiative to develop this coalition. Be specific. Summarize the overall purpose and mission of the coalition. Explain the importance of media preparation for executive leaders of your organization and recommend approaches to engaging with the community on this health issue. By day 4 of Week 3 Submit the Assignment executive summary report in a Word document.
