Choose an area of practice from third sector social work. Critically explore the role, responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and values needed to work in this field. Examine how this links with local authority social work.   

•       This assignment gives you the freedom to choose an area that particularly interests you. The expectation would be for you to include academic literature as well as policy/procedure/law that might impact the area of practice. You can also discuss the work done at particular charities or organisations – however, as in all assignments, respect confidentiality if you use any case examples.  

•       When thinking about critical and reflective writing, you can look at ethical dilemmas that might emerge; particular complexities in the nature of the work; the barriers to good practice; the nature of interdisciplinary work. Remember to support your discussion with academic literature.

A possible way to structure this essay would be:

A)  Paragraph 1 – your chosen area of practice (mental health, housing, dementia, care homes, hospice, rural, green social work, etc)

B)  Paragraph 2/3 – types of skills, knowledge, and values used in this field (whether the field is third sector or local authority, many of the skills, knowledge and values will be the same – some will be different)

C)  Paragraph 4 – any laws and policies and human rights considerations which might influence work

D)  Paragraph 5 – relevant charities, organisations, teams, etc that do work in this area

E)  Paragraph 6 – Interdisciplinary work/link to local authority

F)   Paragraph 7/8 – any complexities in this area of work and/or ethical issues

G)  Paragraph 9 – how this area of practice can be enhanced in the future H) )Paragraph 10– conclusion

 This is your chance to write about an area of practice of particular interest and dig deep into that area. The suggested structure is only a suggestion – please don’t feel you need to follow it verbatim. Some areas might need more than the number of paragraphs I allotted - for example, laws, policies and Human Rights might need 2 or 3! It all depends on your area pf practice and how you feel like approaching this.
