Directions

Using Newman and Newman’s (2018) chronological approach for describing human development across the lifespan (see also Chapter 2 in the Counselman Carpenter textbook), you will choose one or more stages for your assigned case and apply at least one classic human development theory and at least one critical or strengths- and asset-based approach discussed in Counselman-Carpenter's (2025) edited textbook. Follow these steps:

First, identify the life stage(s) you will review. Second, prepare and later upload a slide deck using Microsoft PowerPoint. You will record a 5- to 7-minute video presentation of the slide deck. This presentation will be used in next week’s class discussion. Organize your slide deck (PowerPoint presentation) using the title headings identified below. Stage. Identify the stage and any pertinent information from the case study. Classic Developmental Theory. Identify the theory being critiqued. Briefly discuss the theory, including its core concepts and propositions. Describe the relationship between concepts and what the theory suggests in terms of development. Applying a Critical Lens. Critique the theory based on its applicability and its relevance to your case study. Describe the potential impact of the theory on your case. Consider the use of critical or strengths- and asset-based theories as part of your critique. Critical Theory, Strengths-Based, or Asset-Based Theory (select only one). Identify one critical, strengths-based, or asset-based theory and discuss its relevance to your case study. Describe how it helps inform or understand your case study’s history, situation, and experience. Briefly discuss how this theory is different from classic human development theories. Questions for Assessment. What are three to five questions that align with the theory you chose for slide D that you would include in your initial assessment of your case study? Describe the rationale for asking the question and its connection to the theory. Please remember that you will use your slides for a video narration. Each slide text should not exceed 40 words. The slide should only highlight the key points. Use the speaker notes as your script where you answer the questions above. You will use this script for your presentation. Include at least three credible references. Include in-text citations. Upload the completed presentation to Canvas by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Once you complete the recording, please check the quality of the video to make sure the picture is clear and the sound is audible. You must upload the video file to My Media in Canvas. Links to online video-sharing platforms will not be accepted. Go to My Media in Canvas and click Media Upload. Drag and drop the file or choose the file to upload. All standard video formats (e.g., MP4) are accepted. This will save your video to Kaltura Media. When you are ready to submit your assignment, click “Start Assignment.” Next, click Text Entry. In the Rich Content Editor, click Embed Kaltura Media. Locate your video and click Embed. After you have embedded your video, click Submit Assignment.
