Essay Question 2: Intercollegiate Athletics (Revenue Sport Athletes and Education)

Assignment: Read the following Essay Questions and respond with a 4-5 page paper (not including the title and reference page).  Indicate on the title page clearly which question (1 or 2) you chose.  Do not just answer questions - The assignment must be in essay format that includes an introductory paragraph, supporting paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph (Use headers so it is clear and better organized).  Be sure to review the rubric before beginning.  Due by midnight on Sunday (sooner is always appreciated).

Requirements and Helpful Hints:  All assignments must be submitted as a Word document in the assignment section where Turnitin automatically checks for duplication (plagiarism).  A score higher than 25% is reviewed more closely and may not be accepted.  Assignments must also be submitted using APA format. One word or short sentences may not receive full credit. Elaborate on the topic so that your knowledge may be evaluated more thoroughly.  Use headers (subtitles) to separate different segments of the topic for better organization, presentation, and clarity that all questions/segments were responded to.  Finally, be sure to review the rubric before beginning to be certain the assignment includes all rubric requirements.

Essay Question

Every year, much is made of the question of whether scholarship athletes in revenue-producing sports are receiving college educations. NCAA officials argue that since the passage of several academic reform measures, the academic performance of athletes continues to improve. Still, others argue that even if the measures of academic performance, such as the academic progress rate (APR) and graduation success rate (GSR), appear to be improving, those measures may not be telling the full story. In effect, as pressures to keep athletes eligible to play have increased, there may be greater pressure to cluster athletes in “easy” majors. Read the 2015 article “Why Student-Athletes Continue to FailLinks to an external site.” and the following news release from the NCAA website: “DI to Distribute Revenue Based on AcademicsLinks to an external site..Links to an external site. Is there a problem with revenue-producing athletes not graduating at the same rates as other athletes or the general student population? Are athletes clustered into easy courses or majors? What is the NCAA doing to prevent this from happening?
