Overview

Students will select a family from the Family Trees content section of the course and use this information to complete the Family Health Promotion Plan PowerPoint will include a family genogram. Recommendations for the health promotion plan should be evidence-based and from credible sources. The PPT also needs to reference at least 3 articles on the genetic condition presented in the family, including at least 1 from the past year. Note: This PowerPoint presentation should not be longer than 12 slides. References should be identified as a footnote and listed on the last page of the presentation.

Instructions

The plan for addressing the health promotion and disease prevention needs of your patient should include:

Description of the Family

  • Identify each of the family members by age, gender at birth, and race.
  • Identify the proband who is presented with the genetic disorder and their relation in the family

Description of the Genetic Condition

  • Describes the genetic condition that presents in the family.
  • States if the trait is recessive or dominant.

Describes the pattern of inheritance

  • Describes the disorder, including the biological effect, the physical presentation, and the possible effects on other organ systems.

Genogram

  • Creates a three-generation genogram of the family using appropriate symbols and terminology and explains the relationship between the family members.

Screening

  • Explain the genetic testing and screening for the other family members to screen for the identified genetic disorder presented in the family.
  • Discuss the prevalence rate and prognosis for the disorder identified in the proband.
  • Risk Assessment
  • Identified at least 3 health/wellness risks in the genogram.
  • State strategies to address the three identified risks.
  • Treatment Options
  • Summarize the findings from 3 articles that discuss current treatment options for the proband disorder, one of which needs to have been published within the past year.
  • Discuss the impact of nutrition, activities of daily living, medications, and environmental influences (home environment, etc.).

Health Maintenance

  • Recommended health screening based on age, race, gender, and pre-existing medical conditions for the family members.
  • Discuss the monitoring of the condition and the effectiveness of treatment.

Patient Education

  • Discuss the nursing care of the patient and family.
  • Identify at least two learning resource websites that would be useful to the family.
