Introduction
For most health care workers, the move to electronic health information technologies is a welcome and long-anticipated event. However, this transition can be a stressful and anxiety-filled time for both nurse leaders leading the change process and for the nurses who are being transitioned to a completely new, and often unfamiliar way of gathering, storing, and retrieving data—not to mention utilizing this data to care for their patients.
Organizations and nurse leaders can minimize much of the trepidation and anxiety associated with the implementation and upgrading of these systems by providing the needed time, offering well-planned education, and making available the resources needed to transition from paper and pen charting to electronic health information systems. While implementation of these systems can be costly in time and personnel, it is clear that an educated and knowledgeable workforce will be able to help the organization to meet its stated goals of being more effective and more efficient, while providing better patient outcomes.
This assessment provides an opportunity for you to develop an implementation and training plan that addresses the various factors critical to the successful deployment of the new or upgraded health information technology that was the focus of your previous assessments.
Professional Context
The role of a nurse leader is multidimensional. Training and investing in your staff and in their education will improve their skill sets and further enhance their value to your organization.
Healthcare settings are a fast-paced environment. As a nurse leader you will encounter unique challenges daily. There is no room for miscommunication in healthcare, whether among staff or when relaying instructions to patients. After identifying areas of need it is critical to communicate clearly, concisely, and with intent. Proper implementation and training will have a positive impact on your staff and organization.

· Explain the nurse leader’s role in ensuring effective communication and collaboration amongst stakeholders during implementation and training.
o Types of communication.
o Considerations for shared decision-making.
o Communication and collaboration strategies for each group.
· Propose strategies and monitoring activities to ensure that the continued use and upkeep of the technology is sustainable for the organization or department.
