Scenario:As a trainee computer modelling and FEA engineer for an international design office you have been asked to prepare materials which will be used for initial training of new graduate engineers. The training materials are to compose of a series of tasks and solutions which the trainees can use to learn from during their initial six months in the workplace. The tasks will cover a range of computer modelling and FEA tasks that have been typical to the work your company have been involved in over the past year. |

Submission guidelines:1. Formative submission: Formative feedback will indicate if your work is ‘on track’ and suitable for summative submission. Parts that have been misunderstood or are missing will be drawn to your attention, so that you have the opportunity to update these prior to summative submission. The minimum requirement to obtain formative feedback shall be the submission of work within the duration period indicated above. *The duration period starts from the date of your download from Moodle. 2. Summative submission: Your assessor recommends that you now consider the formative feedback (if provided) as a way to best shape your work in preparation for your summative submission, which is normally 3 weeks after formative feedback has been provided. 3. Resubmission: The assessment board (at the discretion of the assessor) will permit only one opportunity to resubmit your summative submission if required, within 3 weeks of summative submission feedback. Note in this case the assessment grade will be capped at a maximum of pass grade if successful |

Activity 1 a
(i) For the benefit of the trainee engineers prepare a short written report in which you demonstrate the importance of CFD simulations by providing brief details on two different examples where CFD simulations have been used to evaluate pressure and velocity distributions in engineering. Demonstrate the importance of these simulations by explaining why the pressure and velocity simulations would be of importance.
(Guide word count 300 words)
(ii) Perform a full CFD simulation to evaluate pressure and velocity distributions within the twin inlet single outlet pipework system shown below using SimScale.

You shall be required to post-process your simulation results and provide a saved CFD simulation file (upload to your Student Worskpace). Take screenshots of a range of velocity and pressure distributions as evidence here in your answer to this task with a brief explanation of each screenshot image.
(Guide word count 300 words)
Activity 1 b
I. Prepare a written report in which you evaluate the application and limitations of CFD in engineering. Discuss where these models could typically be used in industry, with a relevant example, and evaluate an alternative method to solving the problem would be if a computer based modelling were not to be used. Would the alternative method have the same limitations? Your report should include well annotated and detailed diagrams or images.
(Guide word count - Total 600 words)
II. Using suitable examples to assist your explanation, prepare a report to provide supported and appropriate recommendations for improving efficiency and the generation of suitable meshes for CFD simulations. Your report should include well annotated and detailed diagrams or images.
(Guide word count - Total 600 words)
Task 2 a
(i) With reference to the pipework CFD simulation that you have performed, make suggestions, with detailed explanations, as to where you see the simulator may give inaccurate predictions (faults).
(Guide word count 300 words)
(ii) Discuss and evaluate the modelling methods used in a CFD software that you are familiar with and explain how you think the method of modelling used might be improved upon to produce more accurate results?
(Guide word count 300 words)
Activity2 b
i. With reference to the pipework CFD simulation that you have created extract a range of velocity distribution images for changing inlet velocities. Tabulate your inlet velocities and make reference to your velocity distribution images.
Trace where the potential faults in the application of simulation techniques could be explaining your answer in good detail.
(Guide word count 400 words)
ii. With reference to the pipework CFD simulation that you have created assess the results of the modelling simulation with respect to outcomes and data accuracy. Then make recommendations for improvements justifying why your recommendations are suitable. (Guide word count 400 words)
iii. Produce a report critically evaluating two different simulation software packages used for FEA and two different software packages used for CFD which are used as part of the decision making process in the engineering sector.
