There are several health-related disorders that influence children and adolescents. This can include a group of disorders known as maturational changes. For example, one health-related group of behavioral disorders are elimination disorders. This group includes enuresis (commonly known as bed-wetting) and encopresis (voluntarily or involuntarily stool soiling) in children. While it is normative and perhaps typical for a 3-year-old to soil her pants in the day, it would not be typical for a 10-year-old boy to soil his pants on the school bus. Similarly, it is typical for 3-years-olds to wet the bed on occasion. However, it is not typical for a 9-year-old girl to have problems with bed-wetting. As you can see, these disorders are maturational in nature. When children are young, they are learning the ability to control elimination. Children with encopresis or enuresis are older, and the behavior is problematic and can lead to social isolation as well as problems at home.
Perhaps one of the most discussed (in the media) is eating disorders. These behaviors typically express themselves in adolescence. This is a group of behaviors characterized by disordered eating. Within this category are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge eating (OMNIIC). These disorders can be deadly and often require intensive support and intervention (National Eating Disorders Organization).
Chronic childhood illness is also a health-related disorder that can have long-term effects. A chronic illness is one that persists for more than 3 months or requires hospitalization for more than 1 month. When children and adolescents face life-long physical disorders this can have psychological challenges (for the child and family), financial, and employment challenges (for parents and caregivers). Chronic health care conditions involving children and adolescents can have a profound impact on the child and their family.
These conditions can include diabetes, cystic fibrosis, asthma, and obesity. Not only are these health care conditions serious and require monitoring, doctor’s visits, and medication, they can also exact an emotional and behavioral response. Children and adolescents with chronic health care conditions can become anxious or depressed regarding their diagnosis, which can interfere with treatment as well as social functioning.
