This Individual assessment provides students with the opportunity to apply foundational skills and knowledge acquired throughout the unit in a practice scenario. Students are required to a select practical case study and apply system development life cycle in a suitable methodological approach to propose the design and development of a computer system which solves a business problem in a chosen industry. This assessment also requires students to investigate suitable hardware, software, and network technologies to apply for the specific case study and justify their selections critically. 

Additionally, students are expected to examine ethical and security considerations pertinent to the project, while also proposing best practices in addressing these concerns.

Case Study: Challenges in the Information System of EcoGen energy solutions 

ICT501 Background: 

EcoGen is a national provider of sustainable energy solutions, specializing in solar panels, and energy-efficient home systems. With over 120 retail locations and a growing e- commerce presence, the company relies on a Sales Management Information System (SMIS) to handle various operations, including inventory tracking, sales processing, customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain logistics, and financial reporting. 

As demand for green technology increases, EcoGen Solutions has been struggling with system inefficiencies, outdated infrastructure, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. These issues have led to delayed order processing, inaccurate stock management, data security concerns, and decreased customer trust, ultimately impacting the company's ability to scale its operations efficiently. 

ICT501 Current Problems: 

  1. The outdated infrastructure makes it hard for the system to handle more data and business activities efficiently. The SMIS also doesn't work well with newer technologies like online stores, causing problems with syncing across different channels and delays in processing orders. 
  2. The order processing system doesn't sync well with inventory management, causing delays in checking product availability. Poor coordination with logistics leads to late shipping updates and problems with customer orders, lowering customer satisfaction. 
  3. The SMIS lacks real-time tracking, leading to inaccurate stock records for solar panels, wind turbines, and inverters. This results in frequent overstocking of slow- moving products while high-demand components run out, causing supply chain inefficiencies.
  4. The lack of integration between the online ordering system and real-time inventory leads to delays in confirming product availability, causing inefficiencies in sales processing. 
  5. The SMIS has limited reporting and analytics features, making it hard to get useful insights into sales trends, inventory levels, and customer behavior. Without advanced analytics tools, managers struggle to make informed decisions, which affects planning and efforts to improve operations. 
  6. The system lacks robust security measures, making it vulnerable to cyber-attacks and data breaches. Impact: Customer data and financial information are at risk, leading to potential legal issues, financial losses, and damage to the company's reputation. 
  7. The current SMIS cannot scale to accommodate the company's growth and expanding operations. Impact: As the company opens more stores, the system becomes slower and less responsive, leading to operational inefficiencies and poor customer service
