Overview of Assessment
This module is assessed through a Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Assessment portfolio, comprising:
1.Write a PowerPoint Presentation total of 1250 words count (Based on Enigma below with Harvard Reference)
2. Write a Case Study Essay (Based on the Enigma below for Formative 500 word count, Summative 1250 Words count, and Harvard Reference) Both elements are designed to assess students’ ability to apply person-centred, evidence-based mental health nursing practice, underpinned by the Four Pillars of Nursing, and informed by contemporary theory, research, and professional standards.
PowerPoint Presentation Requirements (Total of 1250 words count) 25 Minutes Presentation. Not more than 18 slides.
Your presentation must demonstrate a systematic, critical, and applied understanding of the following:
1. Person-Centred Care and the Biopsychosocial Model
•Apply the biopsychosocial model to identify and prioritise the individual’s:
• Biological needs
• Psychological needs
• Social needs
•Critically justify priorities of care using current evidence.
2. Care Planning Structured Around the Four Pillars of Nursing:
3. Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Nursing Care
You must articulate a systematic understanding of:
•The pathophysiology of the mental health condition presented
•Relevant pharmacology and how the selected enigma alters or complicates standard nursing care approaches
• Evidence-Based Person-Centred Care Plan: Develop a clear, evidence-based, person-centred care plan
SBAR Handover
Conclude the presentation with a structured SBAR handover and;
The PowerPoint presentation must be structured as follows:
Slide 1: Introduction which outlines the case study
Slide 2: Identify all priorities of care - Person-Centred Care. This can be structured under headings (such as physical, psychological, cultural, discharge planning, multi-disciplinary team involvement, medication issues, health promotion/health education) which will be determined by the enigma.
Slide 3: What priorities have been selected for the presentation and a justification for these (*Biopsychosocial model and research evidence base or SBAR)
Slide 4: Altered pathophysiology
Slide 4 Onwards: Clinical Pillar Care Plan
Then slides on
Leadership Pillar Care Plan
Education Pillar Care Plan
Research Pillar Care Plan
Pharmacology to be included where relevant in the above slides
Slide 5:SBAR Handover – key information that will be handed over. And Conclusion
Final Slide: Harvard Reference. Approx 3/4 slides per slide.
Case Study Requirements for Formative 500 words count and Summative 1250 words count.
Your essay must:
1.Introduce the Case
1. Briefly outline the enigma
2. Justify its relevance to person-centred mental health nursing practice
2.Critically Apply the Biopsychosocial Model
1. Analyse the individual’s needs across biological, psychological, and social domains
2. Prioritise care needs using evidence and clinical reasoning
3.Develop a Person-Centred Care Plan Using the Four Pillars of Nursing
1. Expand on one or more aspects explored in the group presentation
2. Demonstrate deeper critical engagement and synthesis of evidence
4. Pharmacological Considerations
1. Critically analyse the selected medication
2. Discuss implications for:
1. Safety
2. Adherence
3. Shared decision-making
4. Holistic care
5. Professional, Ethical and Legal Considerations: Apply
NMC (2018) standards. Address consent, capacity, safeguarding, and equality where relevant.
6. Conclusion: Summarise key learning.
Reflect on implications for advanced mental health nursing
practice.

Patient Profile
Name: Jim
Age 42, Diagnosis Psychosis, 6ft 3inches tall, weight 14 stone.
Has been a patient in a 10 bed inpatient rehabilitation unit for adults with complex mental health difficulties for 10 months.
Jim has been ‘isolating’ in his room for some time or going out all day on long walks alone. He has recently been feeling ‘unwell’ and is staying in his room only opening the door a crack when staff enquire after his wellbeing. He has a fever and a cough. He says he feels ackey and tired, couldn’t sleep and says he has been vomiting regularly throughout the night. He is very distressed and aroused, he explains he is naked because he is too hot and he is pacing up and down the landing. What might be happening? What do you do short term, midterm, long term. (Biopsychosocial).
