Overview
Interdisciplinary Studies relies on disciplinary insights from more than one discipline. Repko & Szostak (2021) state that interdisciplinary studies relies on “not just on disciplinary perspectives in a general sense, but more particularly on those defining elements of disciplines (assumptions, concepts, and theories) that relate most directly to the problem being solved” (p.35). Students in the MA in INDS program will integrate insights from their two Areas of Study to research a complex problem. Disciplinary perspectives must be evaluated based on available research of a given topic.
In academic writing, a student needs to understand and to put forth individual work that meets criteria established by the following formatting and style guides: APA, MLA, Turabian, and AMA. Formatting styles determine how to write a paper and include guidelines for: title page, fonts, line spacing, margins, proper citations, direct quotations, etc. An interdisciplinary studies student is faced with a variety of formatting and style guides across disciplines during their course of study. This assignment will introduce and prepare the student for a cross-discipline approach to graduate writing.
