How to study this unitApproach to learningLearning approach underpinning unitTo gain maximum benefit from this unit students are expected to apply the theory they learn to real life situations. By keeping abreast of current motivation, reward and performance management issues reported in the media, students will deepen their understanding of the issues and how they may be resolved.

Students will benefit from pre-reading the relevant chapters in the text. Face-to-face sessions will explain the theory behind the concepts but will primarily be about practical application in real organisations.

Content for this unit have been pre-recorded and must be watched via the Echo portal (or through the link on Moodle) before the session, twenty-four hours during the teaching period. Please check handbook and timetables for specific session details. Each topic has three interconnected components: pre-workshop, workshop and post-workshop.

Pre-workshop will include video podcasts, online readings, discussion and other collaborative learning

activities.

Workshops will include a review of the pre-workshop materials, discussion questions, case studies and other

applied learning activities.

Post-workshop will include summarising, collaborating and reflecting on the topic/s covered.

Unit changes in response to student feedbackPrevious students have provided us with feedback to improve this unit. Please help us continue this feedback cycle by completing your own unit survey which will open toward the end of teaching. You can find your Myfeedback surveys at http://myfeedback.murdoch.edu.au/.

Learning activities & requirementsYou need to commit to at least 10 hours a week of study for this unit as you need time to learn the basics about the theories and models (frameworks) and how to apply them effectively.

Overall expectationsYou must complete the pre-workshop activities located on the unit website on time and preferably before the corresponding session.

Pre and post workshop activities, particularly the quizzes, should be done on a computer or tablet (not a phone) with good internet access.

Internal students must attend classes.

Follow the instructions and use the templates and resources provided for this units assessment.

Treat teaching staff and other students with respect.

Learning activities and detailsEach learning session in this unit is split into three core elements to help you master key aspects. They are:

Pre-workshop: Pre-workshop activities are done online in the unit website and consist of a series of videos, activities, and references to interesting websites relevant to the session topic/s. Here is where you learn the fundamentals of theories and models used in performance and reward management (the frameworks).

Workshop: Workshop activities are done in class by internal students (usually in groups) using the activities provided in class by their tutor. Students must attend classes and bring a laptop/tablet so successfully work on activities.

Post-workshop: The Reflection section provides questions to discuss in the light of the topic/s covered in each session. Your lecturer may use it for class discussion as well to help you apply your learning in the real-life scenario. Most sessions will have practice quizzes to test your knowledge.

You need to have an appropriate computer, laptop, or tablet to complete these as a phone does not have a sufficiently large screen.

Expected time commitmentAs this is a 3-credit point unit, we expect you to spend at a minimum 12.5 hours per topic for the total weeks of this teaching period (or 150 hours overall) working on this unit.

Unit ScheduleSee myMurdoch Learning for details of all learning activities and assessments. Go to TeachingTimetables or myCalendar to see your scheduled class times.

Timetable specifics subject to change. You will be notified of changes by the Teaching Team.

Background: Identify the company, country, industry and briefly introduce the issue.

Analyse this case: what happened, why did it occur, what was the impact of the event for the employees affected by the event.

Resolutions and recommendations: through the lens of theories learnt from this unit, propose resolutions about how the organisation can resolve this issue, and provide practical and feasible recommendations of actions employees could take to improve their situation.

Total Marks /20 Assessment 2 - Pay and Benefit Plan (40%)

ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION

Group Assignment. Develop a Pay and Benefit Plan for an organisation

2000 Words (plus minus 10%)

In groups of 3-4 students, select a company and design a well-thought out Pay and Benefit (P&B) Plan that meets both the employee needs and employers objectives. You may include the following:

Identify the objectives;Conduct a Needs Assessment;Formulate the P&B Plan;Communicate the plan to the employees;Develop a continuous evaluation process for the plan.

As a group you must prepare a short report (2000 words) on the development of the P&B Plan. You should include:

Cover Page Professional

Executive Summary (focus on your recommendations)

Table of Contents

Introduction (A hook that interests the reader)

Detailed Plan with discussion, findings, conclusions and recommendations with reference to theories and concepts learnt in this unit.

Reference List

Appendices (not compulsory, only for additional details that may complement the report)

Your report should include headings; you must include at least 10 relevant academic references (2010+). Writing format: 1.5 line spacing, 12 point Arial or Times New Romans, with Margins 2.5cm.

Include all in-text citations and end text references as per the Murdoch guidelines http://library.murdoch.edu.au/Students/Referencing/ . You should use APA7 referencing style.

N.B.: There is a 10% over/under allowance for the word count for this report (from 1800 to 2200). The word count starts the page after the table of contents and continues until the last word before the reference list. However, if you find you have insufficient space to present your plan, it is acceptable to attach some information as appendices. If you do attach appendices, it is very important that these are only supporting information, and the critical discussion is contained in the body of the report.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING MANDATORY REQUIREMENT FOR GROUP WORK!

All work which groups carry out must be done on a cloud-based productivity platform. You may choose one of the two following free services.

Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus

This is Microsofts online version of the Office suite of productivity programs. Your enrolment at Murdoch gives you free access to the premium version of this service. You may access this service from up to five devices you own. This service allows easy collaborative work amongst your group, eliminating version control issues, and providing a method to track contributions. You can get more information about how to install and access Office 365 here: https://askmurdoch.custhelp.com/app/askmurdoch/answers/detail/a_id/1212/~/microsoftoffice-for- students . For South St students, the ITS Help Desk (just inside the door of the library) is a great resource to quickly set this service up on your device.

Google Docs

For anyone who has any type of Google account (for instance, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps) you automatically have access to the free Google Docs service. Google Docs programs look and behave in a very similar manner to MS Office programs. Simply use the Chrome browser to log in to your Google account, and go to http://docs.google.com.There are two reasons using one of these services is mandatory. 1) Distributed and collaborative ICT is rapidly becoming the primary tool for productivity applications, and 2) the Google system provides a means of tracking contributions and activity by group members. In the event that a group member (or members) challenge the mark of another member due to a lack of effective contribution, this is the primary method of investigating and verifying claims.

Important information about working in groups.

The purpose of the group work in this unit is to develop students group work capabilities, as working collaboratively with a variety of diverse teams is a frequent workplace requirement. Group work is a learning outcome for this unit.

You are encouraged to form groups with consideration of the following:

Complementary skills. Ideally, your team will have people who have skills and abilities that complement each other. For example, one person has great ability and skill in writing, another is very good at research, and the third is a competent team coordinator to keep tracking the progress and quality of your assignment.

Understanding each others personality types. An in-class activity will be scheduled in the first session to help increase your self-awareness, and so teammates can better understand your work preferences and behaviours.

Accommodate each others external commitments. Your Unit Coordinator is very aware of challenges faced by students who work or have caring commitments. Your teammates may not be available at the same time as you are, however, we urge you to develop practical ways to ensure the team can function effectively with asynchronous availability.

It is important that all work is conducted on one of the cloud platforms mentioned in the previous section. In the event that a group attempts to seek a differentiated mark amongst members on the grounds of lack of contribution or poor-quality contribution, it is the information recorded on these systems that will assist in making a determination.

If a dispute arises that results in group members seeking a differentiated mark, the following resolution procedures will apply:

The group is required to mediate the dispute in good faith. We remind all students that this assessment is designed to run across the entire teaching period, so it is in your best interests to approach intra-group relations with the intention to work productively and effectively. The outcomes from group mediation can include:

an acknowledgement that a problem occurred, and one or more people may be culpable;an agreement to improve the performance or behaviour in question, and a commitment to reparative contributions to progress the assessment.

HOW TO SUBMIT

One student per group to submit the Group Report via LMS.
