Art Copy Assignment

Objective: Create a copy of an artwork from a museum (not a gallery) that you find on the internet or visit in person. Complete the artwork by hand, without tracing or using digital tools.

Submissions:

    1. One piece of copied art, including four process pictures and a picture of the final piece.
    2. An artist statements.
    3. A link to the original artwork you are copying.

Guidelines:

Choosing Artwork:

    • Select a piece of art from a museum. Ensure it is not from a gallery.
    • The artwork must be copied by hand to paper or canvas.
    • Original artworks for other courses are not allowed; the piece must be created specifically for this assignment.

Drawing:

    • Size: Minimum 11" x 14" paper (larger sizes are encouraged).
    • Surface: Use white heavyweight art paper, at least 90 lb.
    • Media: Pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, crayon, colored pencils, or any combination of these tools.
    • Restrictions: Do not use newsprint, lined paper, or notebook paper.

Painting:

    • Size: Minimum 11" x 14" canvas or board.
    • Media: Use as many colors as needed to recreate the piece. Acrylic is recommended, but other paints (oil, etc.) are allowed. Apply paint using brushes or other methods.
    • Restrictions: Do not use lined notebook paper under any circumstances.
    • Content: Any subject matter is acceptable if it is not hateful or offensive to any person or group.

Copying Criteria:

    • The copied artwork should show similarities in composition, coloring, and other visual elements to the original piece.
    • Focus on recreating the artwork to the best of your ability, but accuracy to the original is not the primary concern. Effort and development are key.

Submission Requirements:

    1. Process Pictures: Submit at least four progress pictures showing different stages of your artwork’s development. Pictures of materials alone do not count towards this requirement.
    2. Final Artwork: Include an image of the completed piece.
    3. Artist Statement: Submit a 200-word artist statement in MLA format. Discuss your creative process, any challenges you faced, and your satisfaction with the final result. Explain your intent and the meaning behind your work.
    4. Original Artwork Link: Provide a link to the original piece you are copying.
    5. File Format: Submit your artist statement in .doc or .docx format.
