Task instructions

The assessor will use the criteria outlined in the following parts to determine if you have satisfactorily completed this assessment event. Follow these instructions to ensure you demonstrate the required knowledge and skills.

This unit is non-clinical in nature, and there are identified ethical issues related to assessing a student conducting an assessment of a person with co-existing needs in the workplace. This simulated event will give you the ability to discuss, analyse and use critical thinking in working with a client with coexisting needs.

The role-play is structured so that you will respond to a person who is a walk-in client and will have no further information, other than what is gained from the client in the initial discussion, as aligned with industry practice.

Part 1: Role play

To complete this part of the assessment, you will participate in a role play with the help of another participant who will act in the role of a walk-in client with co-existing needs attending Indigo Community Services and Health Hub for an initial assessment. Refer to the class Teams site for further information about where and when the role play will occur and how the assessment is to be conducted and submitted.

Prior to the role-play you will need to:

  • Commence the initial assessment formwith the person with co-existing needs.
  • Organise practical aspects of the assessment in consultation with the person such as identifying and prioritising needs, addressing further supports and processes, and empowering the person to advocate for themselves.
  • Verify the information with the client.

At the completion of the role-playyou will be required to:

Role play 1

The scenario

You are required to provide evidence of how you can manage an initial assessment and respond appropriately for one walk in person with co-existing needs. You will not be provided with any of the persons details for this role play as you will be assessed on how you gather this information.

Your role is that of a support worker at the Indigo Community Services and Health Hub. This Centre offers a variety of community programs and intervention services. Your role as a support worker is to work with the person to assess their needs (they will have more than one need) and support them to identify and move forward from their current position.

The person playing the part of the person with co-existing needs will be provided with the required information prior to the scheduled assessment to allow them time to familiarise themselves with their role as a walk-in client with co-existing needs.

The assessor will observe how you respond to the person and how you conduct your initial assessment with the person with co-existing needs. The assessor will use a checklist to record your performance, as well as the required documentation you produces in this event to determine your overall assessment outcome.

You will complete the initial assessment form and verify the information with the client.

Role of the student being assessed

During the role play you must demonstrate the following skills:

  • Complete and submit the initial assessment form from Indigo to accurately identify the co-existing needs of the person.
  • Support the person to access referral service/s during the initial assessment
  • Complete and submit the referral form from Indigo.

To do this you must:

  • Prepare the room for an incoming person ensure that any required documentation, policy documents and/or procedures are available.
  • Make the person feel comfortable.
  • Use good communication skills.
  • Provide information about the assessment process to the person and obtain consent and ensure confidentially is maintained.
  • Gather appropriate and relevant information about the person.
  • Understand cultural, religious and language issues.
  • Analyse this information to identify at least 2 services that the person can access immediately.
  • Provide accurate and appropriate information about the programs your service offers.
  • Make the person aware of confidentiality, disclosure and referral to other services.
  • Seek feedback and understanding from clients and colleagues and experts when required.
  • Explain how their information will be stored and who has access.
  • Complete an Initial Assessment Form and a minimum of 1 referral for the client that is to be accessed from the Intranet site of Indigo Community Services and Health Hubfor this person.
  • Evaluate issues of urgency and eligibility.
  • Assess potential risk factors for service delivery.
  • Provide opportunities for the person to advocate for themselves to access these services with your support.
  • Close the interview on a positive note, summarising the information provided and ensuring that the person understands what has taken place.
  • Consider service delivery and referral options from strengths-based perspective.
  • Seek additional information to ensure they have the full range of information

Once the role-play has been completed you will have to review the client's progress and complete reflective questions

Time allowed

The role play should take approximately 20 30 minutes to perform and/or record.
