Topics for Reflection

Assessment of ELL Language and Literacy Skills 

  • Explain how teachers may use various methods (e.g., formal tests, observations, classroom performance, portfolios) to assess ELL language, literacy, and communicative skills. 

Self- and Peer-Assessment 

  • Discuss how ELLs can be prepared to use self- and peer-assessment techniques when appropriate, and how teachers can support students in developing test-taking skills and strategies. 

Authentic Assessment 

  • Describe ways to assess ELLs’ language and literacy development in the classroom using authentic assessments such as portfolios, checklists, and rubrics. 

Re-Teaching  

  • Identify situations in which re-teaching may be necessary and discuss strategies for adjusting instruction based on assessment results, using relevant examples. 

Linguistic Bias  

  • Explain how factors such as linguistic bias can affect assessment results and provide strategies to mitigate bias with clear, engaging examples. 

Measurement Concepts 

  • Define and explain the importance of measurement concepts (e.g., reliability, validity) and the role of norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessments in evaluating ELLs with relevant visuals or real-world connections. 

Evaluating Assessments 

  • Discuss what it looks like to evaluate both formal and informal assessments to measure oral language, literacy, and academic achievement with strong analysis and examples. 

Classroom Assessment Modifications 

  • Identify and describe a variety of classroom assessment procedures. 
  • Explain how to determine appropriate modifications of classroom tests (e.g., test items, tasks, timing) for ELLs of different backgrounds and proficiency levels.
