Question 10:  Beat Design

Law City

Examine the data for Law City’s current 3 beat plan.  Using the traditional beat design process, calculate the difference between the beat with the highest CFS and the beat with the lowest CFS.

The department has added enough staffing to place 4 officers throughout the city on each shift.  As such, the chief wants to increase the number of beats to 4.

Identify the ESZ areas with the highest CFS and mark on blank map.  Re-Design the city into 4 beats.  *ESZ zones within the new beats must be contiguous.  Calculate the CFS per beat, and then find the difference between the beat with the highest CFS and the beat with the lowest CFS.

*Use the map on page 10 to ensure your ESZ areas are adjoining.

Steps:

1.     Identify the zones with the highest CFS.

2.     Calculate the CFS in each beat.

3.     Calculate the difference between the beat with the highest CFS and the beat with the lowest CFS.

Using the data for each ESZ area and the city map on page 9, draw 4 beats, per the chief’s directive. Use the following steps below to complete the project.

1.     Per the chief’s request, divide the city into 4 beats, ensuring a high CFS ESZ is in each beat.  ESZ areas must be adjoining to make up a beat.  Use the map on page 8 for reference.

2.     Place the ESZ and the CFS into the table under the proper beat.

3.     Calculate the total CFS in each beat.

4.     Determine the beat with the highest CFS and the beat with the lowest CFS

5.     Subtract to find the difference.

6.     Your difference from the highest to the lowest CFS must be lower than the 3 beat plan.  If not, do a second iteration, reconfiguring the beats using the same process.
