Research Topic/Question: Is artificial intelligence (AI) an asset or a threat to___________ careers?
In your “Introductions” discussion post, you named the job title of the career you intend to work in after graduating. That job title is what you will use to fill in the blank above as the focus of your research for the rest of this class, e.g. Is artificial intelligence (AI) an asset or a threat to College English Professor careers?

Paper 1 Assignment
You will write a 1,000 to 1,200-word APA 7 style paper answering the research question for the specific job title you named. The introductory paragraph of the essay must have an argumentative thesis statement based on your opinion (or theory) of why everyone ought to assume that AI would be an asset or a threat to those working in the specific job that is the focus of the paper. Though this is your opinion, you are not to use first-person references or language anywhere in the essay. This means no use of the words “I,” “me,” “my,” “in my opinion,” “I believe,” or the like anywhere in the essay portion. An example of how to do this would be the following:
Original sentence: I believe Cybersecurity Specialists will see a significant increase in job opportunities because artificial intelligence makes it easier for businesses to get hacked.
Revised to remove first-person language: I believe Cybersecurity Specialists will see a significant increase in job opportunities because artificial intelligence makes it easier for businesses to get hacked.
Additional Paper 1 Requirements:
• Each paragraph should average 150 to 200 words in length, including the introduction and conclusion.
• Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that advances one topic in support of the argumentative thesis statement.
• The paper must have an APA 7 title page, plus the 1,000 to 1,200-word essay, and an APA 7 references page. o Watch the “Video Playlist: Formatting an APA 7 Paper.” It visually demonstrates how to correctly format a paper in APA 7 style, and reinforces several of the lesson materials you have been tested on to date in this class.
• The Fortune magazine article assigned as a reading on the first day of class (Fore, 2025) must be one of the sources used in your essay as evidence supporting your opinion. Citing the article does not mean you have to agree with the article.
• Use one or two reputable publications (a scholarly journal article, and/or a professional magazine article, or an industry report) written primarily for readers who are in your intended professional field that discuss the impact of AI.
• The paper should be primarily your opinion and your analysis of how AI can or is being used in your field, supported by citations from only 2 to 3 sources, including the assigned Fortune article.
Complete and submit Paper 1 by 11:59 pm, Monday, March 30.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Annotated Bibliography Steps:
1. Watch the video, "Creating an Annotated Bibliography," walks you through what type of content is required for this type of APA 7 References page and how to format it.
2. Find 8 to 10 different sources you could use to help answer the original research question of whether AI would be an asset or a threat to the career you named. Use the methods shown in the lessons from the Research Proposal Assignment.
i. PLEASE NOTE: It is all right if some of the strongest sources you find contradict your original opinion. That is ok! When you start doing research, you do so with a theory and then see if the evidence you collect proves that theory or opinion is right or wrong. That is research! Your final paper, however, must reflect a thesis that is supported by the evidence you found, even if that means your original theory was wrong.
3. Create an APA 7 annotated bibliography of the 8-10 sources you found using the methods shown in the “Library Information Literacy PowerPoint with Narration” and the York College Library Databases by Subject. This is due by 11:59 pm, Monday, April 13.
The full research paper will simply be an expansion of Paper 1, with the essay section increasing to 2,000 to 2,500 words in length, and an annotated bibliography of the actual sources used in this longer essay the regular references page at the end of the paper.
No abstract is required for your paper! All pages of this paper, from title page to the last paragraph of the last annotation paragraph, must be correctly formatted in APA 7 style. The first paragraph of the essay—the introduction—must provide a context for your paper’s main argument (see research proposal form), as well as an arguable thesis statement that reflects the evidence provided in the 8-10 sources of your annotated bibliography that appears at the end of the paper. Each body paragraph must have its own topic sentence. (These were covered in “Video Playlist: REVIEW--Detailed steps for organizing an academic essay” in the “Course Materials.”).
