THE BRIEF/INSTRUCTIONS
You need to write a reflection of 500 words ±10% regarding the following topic.
During your placement within community pharmacy, you will have seen SOP’s relating to each of the pharmacies daily, weekly, and monthly practices. In addition to risk management, examples include:
· Dispensing activities i.e., appropriate, and accurate labelling and dispensing of prescribed items.
· OTC transactions
· Preparation of NOMAD trays
· Processing of controlled drugs i.e., records, dispensing and checks
· Patient Group Directions (PGDs) e.g., for flu vaccinations in which a pharmacist must process patient information and assess forms for potential risks and subsequent management (i.e., cautions, contraindications and interactions).
· Labelling software that notifies the pharmacist of interactions of varying severity so they may intervene and assess risk.
· Service consultations between pharmacist/dispensing staff and patients (i.e., health checks, medicines usage reviews, new medicines service)
· Communication between pharmacists and other healthcare professionals i.e., GP’s, nurses etc.
· Health and safety protocol relating to the premises, daily practices, and service provision.
· What does being responsible pharmacist (RP) mean? I.e., what activities are permissible in the absence of a RP.
· As part of this reflection, you are required to recall and describe any previous examples where risk has been managed within a pharmacy setting. Elaborate regarding the importance of risk management procedures within pharmacy practice by considering the following points:
· Specificity of the area of pharmacy practice being reflected upon i.e., any of the points mentioned above as potential starting point or an alternatively appropriate scenario.
· Detail any relating guidance, SOP’s or known practices regarding risk management in your chosen scenario.
· Discuss the importance of guidance documents (such as SOP’s, PGDs) and the compliance of staff members with guidance to manage risk.
· In the absence of guidance, describe what steps may be implemented to manage risk.
· In the instance or pre-existing documentation, examine and discuss ways in which these are may be further enhanced, regulated, or updated.
· Finally, reflect on your own practice as pharmacy student, considering what improvements you may make to your practice as developing pharmacy professional. You are not allowed to use AI in preparation for this assignment.
