Search the internet to find a real-life case in popular media in which an eyewitness, or multiple eyewitnesses, went on the stand and said without a doubt that someone committed a crime, but later on the person was exonerated
Use the PowerPoint presentation template, found in the Learning Resources for this Assignment, to create your presentation.
Search the internet to find a real-life case in popular media in which an eyewitness, or multiple eyewitnesses, went on the stand and said without a doubt that someone committed a crime, but later on the person was exonerated because the eyewitness testimony was false.
Note: The National Registry of Exonerations, located in the Learning Resources for this Assignment, is a great place to start your search.
Search the internet to learn more about the case you selected.
Use the library to find at least five recent (within the past 5 years), peer reviewed articles related to false eyewitness testimony.
Consider factors that can contribute to an eyewitness believing their memory despite it being inaccurate.
Consider what steps can be taken to help reduce the incidence of false eyewitness testimony.
(10–12 slides, not including title and reference slides, plus narration or speaker notes)
Based on the case you selected, create a PowerPoint presentation (with narration or detailed speaker notes) in which you address the following:
Title (1 slide)
Include title and your name.
Case Information (5–6 slides)
Identify the case you selected [including reference(s)]
Describe the case and explain what happened.
Describe the role that eyewitness testimony played in the case (e.g., police lineups, in-court testimony)
Describe the timeline of events (e.g., When did the crime occur? How long until the conviction? How long until the imprisoned person was exonerated?)
Explain how this case serves as a negative example of what not to do and what was learned that can be applied to future cases.
Reducing False Eyewitness Testimony (5–6 slides)
Explain at least three steps that the criminal justice and/or forensic-legal systems should take to help reduce false eyewitness testimony. Include an explanation of the rationale for each of the steps you present (including reference(s)).
References (1–2 slides)
Make sure that your PowerPoint presentation reflects graduate-level writing and presentation standards, with professional-looking graphics and appropriate type style.
Use this week’s Learning Resources, as well as the peer-reviewed articles you identified to support your Assignment. Use proper APA format and style for all references and citations.
Note: If you choose not to provide narration for your presentation, instead include detailed speaker notes, as follows:
Under each slide, in the notes section, write detailed speaker notes for each slide to complement the slide content.
Your speaker notes should be clear, in-depth, and function as augmentation to the slide material.
Your speaker notes should be written with sufficient depth to allow someone else to deliver the presentation.
