SH6P06QA Module Title : Health Project Assignment type: Research Proposal Assessment 1 – Research Proposal:

You are required to write a research proposal of not more than 2,500 words.

Objective: In preparation for your dissertation project, you are required to develop a detailed research proposal for a systematic review or literature review on a healthcare-related issue of your choice. This assignment aims to demonstrate your ability to conceptualise and plan research grounded in existing academic literature.

Proposal Structure:

Research title

Clearly state the title of your research proposal.

Ensure it reflects the core focus of the systematic review.

Chapter One: Introduction to the research

  1. Background of the Research

Define the key concepts relevant for your research Provide context for the selected topic, highlighting its relevance to the healthcare field. Use evidence (e.g., statistics, reports, or case studies) to establish the significance of the issue. Highlight current trends, challenges, or debates relevant to the topic. 2. Aim/Objectives/Research Questions

Set a clear and concise aim that outlines the purpose of the review. Provide a set of specific, measurable objectives/research questions that align with the aim (maximum of 4 objectives/research questions). 3. Rationale/Justification of the Research

Explain why this topic is important and worth investigating. Justify your choice based on gaps in existing knowledge, the potential impact on healthcare practices, or the importance of addressing the issue. Justify why a systematic review is an appropriate method to address the research problem. Chapter two: Literature review

  1. Broad review of the topic

Conduct a comprehensive review of existing literature related to your topic. Demonstrate the use of credible academic sources, including peer-reviewed journals, systematic reviews, and authoritative reports. 2. Identify gaps in the literature

Highlight gaps or limitations in current knowledge and research on the topic. Explain how your proposed research addresses these gaps. Clearly connect these gaps to the need for the proposed systematic review. 3. Relevant theoretical models underpinning the study

Incorporate theoretical frameworks that are directly relevant to the research topic. How each theoretical model relates to the research focus. How the theories help frame understanding of the issue. How they guide the development of the research questions or structure of the review. Chapter three: Research methodology

Methodological approach Explain why secondary research and systematic review methodology are appropriate. Discuss the strengths and limitations of systematic reviews. Reference established methodological guidance. Identify potential challenges and outline strategies to address them. Literature search strategy Provide a clear and replicable search strategy. Identify all search methods used. Specify databases, search engines, and relevant organisations to be consulted. Present search terms and structured search strings using appropriate Boolean operators. Indicate search limits such as date ranges or language restrictions. Inclusion and exclusion criteria Develop clear selection criteria based on population, intervention/exposure, study design, setting, and outcomes as relevant. Use a recognised framework such as PICO, PICOS, or SPIDER where appropriate. Justify why each criterion is relevant to the review aims and objectives. Study selection process Outline the process for identifying, screening, and selecting studies. Describe the procedures for title and abstract screening, full-text assessment, and data extraction. Identify quality appraisal tools to be used for assessing methodological rigour. Present the process to ensure accuracy and consistency. Data analysis and synthesis Describe the method of data extraction, including key data elements. Identify the synthesis approach, such as narrative synthesis or thematic synthesis. Justify how the chosen method aligns with the type of data and research questions. Ethical considerations Discuss ethical principles relevant to conducting secondary research. Address proper citation, avoidance of plagiarism, data transparency, and integrity. Acknowledge whether official ethical approval is required according to institutional guidelines. Research Timeline Develop a timeline for completing the research project using Gantt Chart. References
