Week 3 Def essay

Details

The Short Story  assignment is to do a critical analysis of one of the short stories in the Back to the Lake textbook as the source, which you will cite parenthetically in the body paragraphs, and with the "Works Cited" page as the last page, according to MLA. This shorter literary essay should be a minimum of 750 words If you do not make the length of this assignment, you will not pass. You will also not pass the assignment if you do not have the required number of quotes You must have at least one direct quote in every body paragraph

For the essay, your only direct quotes will be from the story itself .

Remember to only use third person, present tense verbs, and spell out all contractions

This assignment has two goals:

1.You will support your thesis with quotes (only from the story itself) to produce an essay that is a commentary of how the story represents something beyond "the events of the story".

2. Your essay will support and expand your thesis

Write an essay of 500 to 700 words defining “brain death” as a medical condition and ARGUING that patients who meet all the standard criteria for this condition should (or should not) be taken off life support.

1. You may use first/second person only in direct quotes .

2. . *Your assignment  will not receive a passing grade, if you do not have quotes that are not introduced or cited.... and you will not pass the assignment if it does not meet the length requirement

3. You must spell out all contractions.

4. You may not introduce the quote using simply the author or character's name

750 words If you do not make the length of this assignment, you will not pass. You will also not pass the assignment if you do not have the required number of quotes You must have at least one direct quote in every body paragraph(however, adding additional quotes to a final draft is always encouraged).

Week 4 compare contrast essay rd

Details

Instructions:  You must submit your rough draft  for the Compare-Contrast  TEAL  (It must be in outline form) outline on Canvas by the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted.  Your comparison or contrast essay must be at least 500 words long, typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman font, and in MLA format. Remember to submit your outline as a Word document or a Google doc. If you submit it a different format, I will not be able to grade your work and you will not receive credit for the assignment.

Citations should be the last name of the author followed by page number: (Jones 48).  If no page number was included in the source, then just the last name is sufficient.

NOTE: You cannot use the author's name in the quote introduction if it is the only element to put in the citation

For example:

It is clear that he is a key part of the show:” I’m the host, yes. And I write all the music, and I write all the scripts”

(Rogers).

If you do have a page number, then you can use the author's name in the citation:

Mr. Rogers uses logos in a manner which justifies his request for better funding. Rogers presents one example of his predicament with reasonable tone: “It may sound like quite a difference, but $6,000 pays for less than two minutes of cartoons" (4).

If you do not make the length for these , you will not pass. You will also not pass the assignment if you do not have the required number of quotes. I will also grade for run-ons and fragments.

Here is the assignment for your next paper:

Your thesis must have 2 points only ( one comparing and one contrasting )

Even though this essay will not use a story from book you will have two sources to use. You are going to compare the speech from earlier in the semester from Mr. Rodgers to a letter written by  Dr. King:

Fred Rogers - Testimony to Congress on PBS Funding-2.pdf Download Fred Rogers - Testimony to Congress on PBS Funding-2.pdf

Letter_Birmingham_Jail.pdf Download Letter_Birmingham_Jail.pdf

Both men used logos, ethos, and pathos to prove their points.

You will not use outside sources for this assignment.

Topic

Pick one from logos, ethos and pathos and explore one way they use it the same and one way they approach it differently.
