OVERVIEW

This week students are introduced to policy institutes that are non-government organizations (NGO) having special interests in supporting their mission through policy analysis, research, and policy evaluation. Students identify how, as nursing leaders, they can impact policy through participation in and/or use of the NGO information through planned policy advocacy communication with a national political leader or their team.

In preparation for your signature assignment that is a policy proposal for a global health issue that also affects the US, begin by contacting the office of your state senator or Congressional representative and scheduling an appointment. (These politicians have local offices within your voting district where you should be able to visit with them or present via Zoom or other electronic means).

I met with “Sandy Nurse: NYC Council Member for District 37 (Bushwick, Brownsville, East New York in Brooklyn). I spoke to her during Gotham's health fair in the community on 8/7/2026

  • At your meeting, the agenda should include your concerns about a global population health issue that also impacts the US, a supportive NGO, and progress that is being made through policy decisions.
  • Additionally, based on your knowledge of the health issue you will propose a new policy or adjustment to a current policy to close the current gaps and meet the population needs. See the signature assignment for additional information.
  • To prepare yourself for this meeting, review what Congress has been working on to improve the health of global populations. As a nurse leader, be prepared to discuss how to influence change through the strategies you have prepared.
  • A summary of this meeting needs to be written up and future plans discussed as a part of your signature assignment. Provide the date of the meeting in this journal.
