Using the Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) tool develop and present the failure causes for the main machinery system/s (e.g., main engine/s, etc.) used onboard
Assignment Task
Overview
This coursework aims to enable students to apply the knowledge gained within the Systems Availability and Maintenance (SAM) lectures related to the marine systems reliability and maintenance methodologies, tools and approaches. Also, to be able to critically reflect on their use as well as provide a practical application of one of the above tools within an actual maritime case.
Questions
1. Present, discuss, and elaborate in detail on the current state-of-the-art of methodologies and tools employed for ship machinery maintenance and condition monitoring. Further elaborate on the features that need to be considered for the application of the above in the case of two shipping companies; one managing a large fleet of LNG vessels and the other one operating a single bulk carrier vessel. It is essential to demonstrate knowledge of the above methodologies and tools extending beyond the material and sources offered within the lecture notes.
2. Using the Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) tool develop and present the failure causes for the main machinery system/s (e.g., main engine/s, etc.) used onboard a ship having dual fuel capacity (minimum number of rows to be shown: 20). For guidance, you may also consider the FMECA examples and criticality matrices provided in the lecture notes.
