Week 7 Assignment
For this assignment you will use the Week_07_Assignment_Data.csv file, which can be found on the Week 7 Assignment page in Canvas. This is a hypothetical dataset. Assume these data were collected from a representative sample of students enrolled in one large introductory statistics course. Prior to taking the first exam in the course, students completed two measures of text anxiety: Old_Test_Anxiety and New_Test_Anxiety.
Old_Test_Anxiety is an existing measure of test anxiety. It’s scores are known to be highly reliable and valid. A group of researchers are concerned that some of the questions on the old survey may be getting outdated, so they’ve developed a new survey to measure test anxiety: New_Test_Anxiety. The researchers have asked a sample of students in one introductory statistics course to take both the old and new surveys.
The dataset includes the following variables:
· Student_ID: A unique nominal-level identification number assigned to each student
· Primary_Degree: Whether the student’s primary degree is a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or Bachelor of Science (BS)
· GPA: The student’s grade point average at the beginning of the term
· Old_Test_Anxiety: The learner’s score on an existing measure of test anxiety, completed right before taking the first test in the course
· New_Test_Anxiety: The learner’s score on a newly developed measure of test anxiety, completed right before taking the first test in the course
Criteria:
· Use JASP to construct a scatterplot and histograms
· Interpret the relationship between two variables from a scatterplot
· Use JASP to compute a correlation coefficient
· Interpret the statistical significance of a hypothesis test
· Discuss how your correlation can be used to support a specific type of reliability or validity
In
JASP, construct a scatterplot and histograms for the Old_Test_Anxiety and
New_Test_Anxiety variables. |
[Include
screenshots of your scatterplot and histograms here] |
Explain
why it is appropriate to use Pearson’s r as a measure of the
correlation between the Old_Test_Anxiety and New_Test_Anxiety
variables. Refer to the plots you made in the previous question. |
|
In
JASP, compute Pearson’s r. In addition to r and the p
value, add the sample size and 95% confidence interval to your output. |

a screenshot of your JASP output here] |
Is there
evidence of a relationship between Old_Test_Anxiety and New_Test_Anxiety
in the population? Explain how you determined this. |
|
Explain
how the correlation you computed could be used to support a specific type of
reliability or validity. Be sure to clearly state which type of reliability
or validity is supported. And, explain how it is supported by your
correlation. |
