Whenever we have discussion assignments, there will always be two stages.
• Stage 1: Post your response to the original prompt/assignment I give you! Pay attention to the word count. Sometimes I will ask you to make short
responses or long ones.
• Stage 2: Reply to 2 other students' posts that respond to the assignment I've given. You can ask them questions about their thoughts, thank them for a
specific part of their post that helped you understand, or add a new idea to their post. Please make sure your responses to others are at least 25 words
long.
Does everybody understand? If you have questions about this process, please send me a message! And now, we'll get to the actual introductions assignment!
Instructions
This week, we're continuing to learn about rhetoric. We've discussed the rhetorical situation and the rhetorical appeals. I want you to continue practicing how
to identify rhetoric, because this is exactly what your midterm will be about. To complete this assignment, l'd like you to watch this video: "Disability Benefits E
"E"It's from John Oliver's comedy-news show, Last Week Tonight. Quick content warning: because the host, John Oliver, is a comedian on HBO, he does swear
and make inappropriate jokes.
After you've watched the video, please answer the following questions and make sure you use the specific terms/words we've used for rhetoric AND disability
in your answers:
• What is John Oliver's main argument in this episode? How does it relate to some of the concepts we've learned about disability?
• What tone and style does John Oliver use when he's talking to the audience? Why do you think he does this? Please reference specific examples where you see
his tone and style at work.
• How logical did Oliver's argument feel? Do you think he explained himself well and provided enough evidence?
• What examples of ethos do you see in this episode? Do they make you trust him, as someone discussing this issue?
• How do you think he wants people to feel, while they're watching the episode?
• Who do you think is the intended audience for this episode?
• Finally: what did you think of the episode? Did he persuade you to agree with his argument?
After you've shared your post, reply to two other people's original posts.
