Assessment description

This assignment is based on the proposed Victoria Street Apartments project.

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices of measurement and estimating, as well as the use of the Standard Method of Measurement applicable to the Australian construction industry.

Assessment instructions

You are required to prepare a priced Bill of Quantities (BQ) for the Victoria Street Apartments project, covering the following items up to bottom of the Level 3 slab:

  • Groundworks items
  • In-situ concrete items
  • Formwork items
  • Reinforcement items (only measure those with reinforcement details)

Please note that you do not have to measure bored piers and staircases.

You are required to prepare the priced BQ in accordance with the requirements of the Australian and New Zealand standard method of measurement of building works (ANZSMM).

Format

The assignment must be submitted as a neat, well-organized, and professional PDF document. Ensure the report includes the following:

  • Cover page
  • Cover Letter
  • Summary: A total estimated cost breakdown for groundworks, concrete works, formworks, and reinforcement
  • Priced Bill of Quantities (BQ): excluding profit and contingencies, completed using CostX software
  • Query Sheet
  • Assumptions Sheet
  • Individual Reflections: Contributions and insights from each group member
  • References
  • Appendices, including:
    • All relevant annotated drawings or marked-up drawings, screenshots of computer-based measurements, or calculations
    • Build-up rates for each item (groundworks, concrete works, formworks, and reinforcement). These must be computed based on material, plant, and labor costs. The aim is to calculate unit rates, not to reference rates from Rawlinson's or other sources, though Rawlinson's may be used for verification.
    • All unit rate build-up calculations must be attached to the report. These calculations can be printed using the 'copy' or 'print screen' function.

Please ensure that your names and student IDs appear only on the cover page and in the individual reflections section of the assessment, and are not included elsewhere in the document. This requirement is important, as sample student work may be used for accreditation purposes.

ULOs covered

This assessment task will help you acquire and demonstrate the following Unit Learning Outcomes:

Unit Learning Outcome (ULO)

ULO1: assessed through student ability to apply the basic principles and practices of measurement and estimating to the given tasks.

ULO2: assessed through student ability to use of the Australian Standard Method of Measurement as a tool for completing the given tasks.

ULO3: assessed through student ability to measure quantities and estimate unit rates related to the given task.

ULO4: assessed through student ability to apply information technology to complete the given tasks.

Technical requirements

This task has specific technical requirements, which are outlined as follows:

You are required to measure quantities, estimate rates, and prepare the Bill of Quantities (BQ) using CostX software.

Guidance for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in this assessment

Deakin welcomes the opportunity to engage with emerging technologies in education and seeks to build your capability in the ethical and responsible use of current and emergent technology.

Deakin also upholds a commitment to academic integrity and to ensuring high-quality educational outcomes that prepare you for an AI-driven future.

Gen AI as an assistant

Using genAI as an assistant is appropriate in this assessment task.

To support your learning in this assessment task, it is recommended that you limit genAI use to assist with specific tasks such as editing your work to identify grammatical and spelling errors and getting feedback on your work to improve clarity. You must modify any AI-generated content you use. Your final submission should be your own work and show how you have used your own critical thinking skills and what you have learnt in this unit.

It is important that you take responsibility for your final submission, including:

• Evaluating the accuracy and quality of any genAI generated material.

• Acknowledging how you used genAI tools in this assessment to ensure you are making informed decisions about your learning, demonstrating learning you have gained in the unit, and acting with integrity.

Please use the Acknowledgement statements to guide how you acknowledge the use of genAI in this assessment.
