You will begin by investigating the current compliance standards of the service. Choose two regulatory authorities from column (a) from the table above and describe how their functions and resources assist with compliance.

4. Within the first week of your role as manager, you receive a complaint from a young person. They have stated that the staff member brings alcohol in on shift and has approached a few female residents and offered alcohol and their personal phone number. As stated, the young person will contact the local media as she does not feel safe at the service.

5. As the new manager of a disability respite service, you want all workers to adhere to the legal and ethical standards of the organisation. You understand the importance of vulnerable people receiving a safe and supportive service and the importance of employees' skills and knowledge to carry out their responsibilities ethically.

At a staff meeting, you decide to address inclusive practice. Recently you were advised several client outings had been cancelled as the clients in respite on those days required support with their wheelchairs. You overheard staff comment that moving wheelchairs in and out of vehicles was ‘annoying’ and ‘not worth the time’. The planned outdoor outings were replaced with in-house activities.

6. It is important as a new manager to be aware of your responsibilities towards the workers, clients and even the broader community when managing a disability service.

a) Explain how you would evaluate two responsibilities you want to ensure are met for the organisation's employees, such as fairness and safety

b) Explain how you would evaluate two responsibilities you want to ensure are met for the clients receiving a service.

c) A support worker reports to you their concern for the welfare of a service user’s eight-year-old sister who lives in the same home. She is often observed to have bruises on her arms, and the service user has spoken about the stepfather being abusive. Explain how you should respond? Include the mandatory reporting requirements in your answer.

7. As a manager, you should be keeping your colleagues informed of any legislative and ethical changes or updated compliance requirements.

a) Choose one method of receiving updated information and use it to find an example of a changed or emerging legal requirement or ethical issue within the community services sector. Outline the issue below and provide the reference.

b) In the template below, write an email to your peers and colleagues to share the relevant information (from question 10a) with them.

c) Write an email to your colleagues (support workers and supervisors) addressing observed delays in report writing at the end of staff shifts. You want to understand how this occurs (for example, is it due to staff not having enough time after handover or are there issues with IT resources or IT competence?) and how work practices may change.
